Manic-Depressive Illness: Planning for Wellness
Set clear, realistic short-term goals for yourself.
Return to your responsibilities gradually. Keep in mind that this illness makes you very sensitive to stimulation and changes in routine.
Take your medications regularly, as prescribed.
Work at maintaining friendships and a network of support.
Establish a regular, predictable daily schedule and stick to it.
Take a course in stress management and/or assertiveness.
Keep physically fit. Eat a well-balanced diet. Sleep adequately and at consistent times.
Get aerobic exercise regularly at least three times a week.
Avoid street drugs.
Social use of alcohol is a very individual matter, so talk it over with your therapist.
Ask a friend or family member to be ready to help if you begin to have danger signs of relapse.
Ask for help when you need it.
Work diligently in therapy.
