Possible Motive: Suicide by Cop
Tuesday, September 23, 2003
A Spokane teenager who was shot Monday after a brief standoff with police had
written a page and a half suicide letter and left it in his bedroom before going
to school with a gun.
"He talked explicitly about pain and depression," said Spokane Police Chief
Roger Bragdon in a news briefing today.
Bragdon said he believed Sean Fitzpatrick, 16, intended to commit suicide at
Lewis and Clark High School when he barricaded himself in a room at the downtown
high school. Instead, he was shot by three officers who reacted when the teen
lifted his gun, Bragdon said.
"Suicide by cop," as Bragdon called it, is well known among lawenforcement.
"It means someone is going to force us to do it," he said.
Bragdon said Fitzpatrick's note made it clear he did not want to hurt anyone
else. He also indicated he wanted his suicide to be public, Bragdon said.
"It may be the only time this young man takes center stage," Bragdon said. "It
may be the only time everyone pays attention to him."
